Reflection
I have learned quite a bit in English 2010 this semester. I thought that I wouldn’t need to learn much, because I thought I learned it all in me American Literature class. My previous professor was helpful and patient with me although she had only expected those who had already taken 2010. I learned structure from her and 1010, but in this class I learned even more. I liked that we learned about all of the different genres. There are so many ways to write a paper to get information out and this class helped with how to structure that information.I was very thankful for the peer reviews. You may think your paper is perfect, but there is always room for improvement. I think my classmates were honest and extremely helpful. I hope I did the same for them. One thing I can think of at the top of my head is learning about how to make the best brochure. I learned that the information should be short and sweet so when I reviewed another student’s I noticed, he did the opposite. I was able to let him know a better way in structuring his piece and my own. I tried not to sugar coat my reviews for other people. It was good to have learned about each genre so that although we were not using that specific genre for our paper, we could help give feedback. For example, I chose to do a memoir over a review or profile. Just because I did a completely different genre, I still read about the other two. I was able to give positive input for help in someone’s review. I was glad to have done so.
Like I said in my previous assignments, I am glad my group chose such a great topic for our CWP. It was a topic that I felt strongly about and could relate too. I was glad to learn more and research certain things I did not know. I know our topic will help any reader better understand the importance of our youth being healthy. This awareness is shown in all of our pieces in different ways.I chose to focus my position in our topic on kids having more options of fitness at school. I believed in this idea because I felt it was one of the reasons I was able to stay fit when I was young. I played the assigned game at lunch and recess. When school was over I played handball, basketball, track, and any game that we had available to us. I want all kids to have that option in a safe and fun environment.
Going back on my assignments, there were quite a few things I changed to make it look perfect for my portfolio. I want to look professional and prove that I am paying attention to reviews. I also want people to see my improvement. This class was great on focusing on what we could improve which definitely helped me since I feel my husband doesn’t know what to expect and what to correct.
In my report I fixed the spacing in my works cited. It was single spaced and the rest of my paper was double spaced. I moved a paragraph because it was in a bad place. It was chopped because I was talking about one subject, changed subjects, then went back to the previous one. I also had a few sentences that had improper grammar, and I overused the word “ensure”. I found synonyms to replace the it though.
I really felt that when I revised my brochure for the final project, it was completely solid. In my reviews, they said my format was off and it was. I went with what Andrew said and chose to use Microsoft Word’s template instead of Google Docs. There was a big difference in quality and I am so glad I used a different program.
In my memoir about myself, I fixed all of the things that my reviewer suggested. I went into detail about what activities I did as a kid. I also explained more about my family. I think this will give readers a better feel of why we ate and lived the lifestyle that we did. My images were in awkward places, so I tried putting them in less distracting areas. I want them to accent the paper not get in the way.
It was easy for me to pick the papers that I did for my portfolio. Although I felt I put a lot of work into each piece, there were about four that I liked more than the others. I can honestly say that I love the way my brochure turned out. I really enjoyed the images I added. Of course I picked my memoir. I put a lot of work into talking about myself! I also feel like my report itself was the assignment that got my opinion and my research on our group’s topic. This report helped me learn new things and I was able to see different angles. It was so interesting to show the research in the different genres.
I hope you can see that in this portfolio, it wasn’t just about getting information and putting it together in essay form. I really enjoyed each assignment because it helped me learn within the research and readers could see how I felt personally about the subject. Hopefully the readers will also enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed learning and writing about the awareness of obesity in our youth.
