Signature Assignment

The assignment that I am choosing to share is my discussion for Chapter 11. I chose this discussion as my signature assignment because I am currently working with someone who is emerging into adulthood. When I was reading Chapter 11, I immediately related the information to my life and what I have seen. I have learned that as you are emerging into adulthood people are still trying to find who they are. They may make things up to feel comfortable around others. It is actually normal. When I think about the young girl I work with who is constantly making up stories, I now understand that she is just growing up. She is young and in that stage. I was glad to see that I am not the only one who has dealt with someone like this. This is another reason why I chose this assignment. I not only related this subject to my own situation but with another student. She also knew someone who did the same things I had described. This is significant to me becauseI feel like I retain things better if I can share and relate to others about the same matter. This is a better learning of the situation and it helps us understand what these people may be going through.

Discussion Ch.11

Carolina Smith

I believe that this stage should be taught. I honestly felt this way and feel it this way as well. I feel like I am so far behind and that I should be further in my career like other 22 year olds. This sort of showed me that I wasn't the only one who stays on track and feels the way I do. I know that it is good to take school seriously and have fun living my life now. In this chapter we learned about finding our identity and our changing personality. I am definitely more comfortable with myself and what makes me different from others. A few years ago, I wasn't. I remember I would look to others about how I thought I should be a few years ago. Now, I am who I am no matter what people perceive me to be. Love it or hate it. I live my own life, not how I think people want me to. I work with a girl who is 17. She lies about things to make herself look better and I can't even be mad. She is young and she's looking for herself still, and I realize this. People need to learn that it is a phase that they may be going through and we all do it. I see her going through this.

To me characteristics of an emerging adult is change and realization. Many people don't even notice it. You start becoming more comfortable with yourself. You acknowledge your culture and differences from others. It is also the time that you want to make choices for your future and get more responsibilities whether you like to or not. Emerging adulthood is about experiencing new things. Jobs, majors, friends, lovers, are many of the things that will change through your emerging adulthood. Although I was curious about certain things, drugs and risks were not something that spiked my interest.

I have a friend that's 29 and has the same problem, lying about everything. I worked with her in a bar for 5 years and some how she managed to have 3 masters degrees and serve in the military for 8 years and had been a dancer for 10 years....It makes no sense to me to lie about life like that. I would rather hear about her real life no matter what it was like. I think accepting your self and your life and being more comfortable with who you are is a great characteristic to add to emerging adulthood. It's just sad how much some people can't do that, like your young friend and mine.

    Carolina Smith:

I agree. She is a great person. I just can't stand the stories. It makes me feel like she thinks I am dumb or something. Like I can't add two and two. It's embarrassing. Oh well. It's about emerging adulthood I guess. I hope that as she gets older she will become more comfortable with herself.
